The Galen Litter Box System

A product of www.wvcats.com

Thank you for purchasing the Galen Litter Box System (GLBS).  Assembly should be fairly fast and easy, especially if an extra pair of hands is available.  Quick instructions follow.  For more detailed instruction, read on below.  Simply line up the sides to the back, insert bolts, and tighten.  Then, place the two front pieces, insert bolts, and tighten.  Attach hinges to the top.  Then, attach the top to the back via the hinges.  Attach lid support to top and then to the side.  Place system on floor and insert the litter box onto the floor inside the system.  The GLBS is sized for jumbo/extra large sized litter boxes, 22” x 16”.  Hang the plastic liner with liner inside the box, insert knobs, and tighten.  And, voila!  Your system is ready for use.

The GLBS was designed to “organize” urine flow into the litter box when a cat lifts his, or her, rear end into the air while urinating.  This is accomplished through the use of a plastic liner hung inside the box.  The inside liner is reversible, easily removed, and easily cleaned when soiled.  The top swings up to allow for easy access to the liner for the occasional cleanup that will be required.  Further, the top serves as another resting spot for one or more cats, or a place to store unopened litter containers.

Another benefit is a larger open area for cats to use the litter box, especially in multi-cat homes.  This helps defray tensions from one cat teasing or trapping another cat while that cat urinates or defecates, that often happens with traditional covered litter boxes.  The system is also designed to look more like a piece of furniture to more readily fit into one’s décor and hopefully to look a little more stylish than a litter box.  The GLBS can also be easily disassembled when necessary.  It is painted with mold-resistant paint designed for use in a bathroom.  Clean with mild detergent or soap.

Detailed assembly instructions.

*  Identify the parts.  As a note, all holes are pre-drilled.  In fact your system was assembled in the shop after painting.  This should make finding the holes easier.

*  Take one of the side pieces.  The outside of the piece has the beadboard face.  Each side piece will have only two holes on the back end.  Identify the left piece – beadboard outside and two hole for connecting bolts on the back.  The front of the piece will have two pairs of holes for connecting bolts.

*  Now, take the back piece, with beadboard face facing out, align it to the side.  Insert a connecting bolt at the top of the side piece and begin tightening the bolt.  Do not tighten completely.  Insert a bolt at the bottom and begin tightening.  Do not tighten completely.

*  Then find the right side and repeat the process.  Again, do not tighten the bolts completely.

*  You should now have a “u” shape.  Find the two front pieces.  The top of each front piece has a rounded back edge.  Line up the top front piece, with grooves on outside and rounded back edge on inside of box, insert bolts and begin tightening.  Again, do not tighten the bolts completely.  Repeat with bottom front piece.

*  Now that all wooden parts have been connected, tighten all the connector bolts snugly one at a time.  Your core box is assembled.

*  Next, attach the hinges to the top piece.  Find the holes on the top piece.  That will be the bottom of the top piece.  Before fastening the hinges, take one and close it all the way until the hinge is completely closed (it will do this in only one direction).  That configuration is the way the hinge will need to be connected in order for the top to close.  Open the hinge and place one “wing” against the top where the holes are located.  Fasten the hinge to the top with the small (quite small) brass screws.  Do not over tighten the screws – just tighten them snugly.  Repeat with other hinge.  Test the orientation of the hinges by closing them completely.  Then, lift lid and gently place on top of box.  Do the hinges allow the box to close?   If not, the hinges are on reversed.  Remove them, reverse them and re-tighten. You also have two extra small screws provided by the manufacturer.  Once both hinges have been fastened, it’s time to fasten the top to the box with the other small screws.

*  Now the trickiest part.  An extra pair of hands here will really be helpful.  Take the top and align the hinges with the holes on top of the back piece of the box.  You may need to align one hole in the hinge with its corresponding hole on the top of the back piece.  Insert a small screw and tighten.  Do not tighten the screw(s) completely.  With only one screw attached, carefully line up the other hinge with one of its holes aligned properly.  Insert hinge screw and tighten.  Do not tighten the screw(s) completely.  Now insert the rest of the screws and tighten.  Do not tighten the screw(s) completely.  Once all screws are in their holes and mostly tightened, tighten all the screws snugly but not overly tight.

*  Then, take the long skinny lid support and locate the two big brass screws that are not labeled with masking tape.  Attach the support to the two corresponding holes on the bottom of the top and tighten.  Do not tighten the screw(s) completely.  Now take the labeled brass screw and begin tightening the screw through the lid support slide into the hole near the top of the left side.  Do not ever tighten this screw all the way as that will prevent the lid support from sliding on its glide.  Tighten most of the way and test the lid (the top has become the lid) in both open and closed position.  Does it open and close easily?  If not, loosen the screw a little and re-test.

*  The hard part is over.  Open the lid and get the plastic liner and the black knobs.  Line up the holes in the GLBS with the grommets of the liner, insert knobs and turn until they stop.  The knobs will not screw completely into the holes!  It may be easier to find the middle hole of the plastic and connect it to the middle hole in the back piece first.  Then, do the rest.

*  Close the lid and it’s done.  Don’t forget to put in the litter box when your piece is in place and to place the liner so that it hangs inside the litter box!   The Galen Litter Box System is sized for a jumbo/extra large size litter box.  What is sold as a large is smaller than the width of the Galen Litter Box System.  But, it can still work.  Pet Food Direct (www.petfooddirect.com) sells extra large/jumbo litter boxes.
